What is laminated safety glass?
Laminated safety glass is a type of glass that prioritizes both human safety and property security by utilizing a multi-layered construction. It consists of two or more panes of glass held together by a tough, transparent interlayer, usually made of PVB (polyvinyl butyral). The 'safety' designation comes from the fact that if the glass is impacted and breaks, the interlayer holds the fragments in place. This prevents the sharp, jagged pieces characteristic of standard glass from falling and causing injury to people nearby. Because of this, it is frequently mandated by building codes for use in overhead glazing, such as skylights, as well as in glass floors and railings. In addition to injury prevention, laminated safety glass acts as a security deterrent. It effectively combines the visual clarity of standard glass with the durability and protective qualities of a composite material.
