Is hurricane glass bulletproof?
Hurricane glass, also known as impact-resistant glass, is generally not bulletproof, although they share some similar manufacturing techniques. Hurricane glass is designed to withstand the impact of large flying debris (like a 2x4 piece of lumber) traveling at high speeds and to remain intact under extreme wind pressure. It is typically made of two layers of tempered or heat-strengthened glass with a very strong, thick interlayer (often SentryGlas or PVB). While this construction makes it much harder to break than standard glass, it is not engineered to stop the concentrated, high-velocity energy of a bullet. A bullet will typically penetrate the layers of hurricane glass quite easily because the glass and interlayer are not thick enough to absorb the kinetic energy. However, hurricane glass does provide a higher level of forced-entry resistance compared to standard glass, as an intruder would need to strike it repeatedly to create an opening. There are specialized products that are rated for both hurricane and ballistic protection, but these are distinct, higher-end products.
