How to install a security door?
Installing a security door is a multi-step project that, when done correctly, significantly increases the resistance of an entry point to forced entry. The process begins with selecting the right door: a true security door should be solid steel or steel-clad, rated for the appropriate level of forced entry resistance, and paired with a reinforced steel frame. The frame is the most overlooked component — a heavy steel door set in a standard wood frame provides minimal real security because the frame will fail before the door does. Start by removing the existing door and frame completely, down to the rough opening. Install the new security door frame, which should be fabricated from heavy-gauge steel and anchored with long structural screws (3 inches or longer) that penetrate through the interior framing members rather than just the door casing. Use a minimum of six anchor points per side. Set the door in the frame and adjust the hinges until the door hangs square and swings freely. Install the security door's multi-point locking hardware — typically a deadbolt system that engages locking bolts at the top, bottom, and center of the door simultaneously. A door reinforcement kit including hinge bolts, a door barricade bar, and a steel strike plate with 3-inch screws adds additional layers of resistance. Seal the perimeter of the installed frame with appropriate weatherstripping and caulk.
