Does safety glazing film stop bullets?
No, safety glazing film, often called security window film, does not stop bullets. It is a common misconception that these films can provide ballistic protection. While security film is excellent at holding glass together after an impact, it lacks the mass and the multi-layered construction required to absorb the massive kinetic energy of a bullet. A projectile will pass through a filmed window with very little loss of velocity. The primary benefit of safety film is that it prevents the glass from shattering and falling out of the frame, which can protect people from flying shards and delay an intruder who is trying to smash their way in with a hammer or brick. If an intruder is using a firearm to gain entry, they will still be able to create a hole in the glass, although the film might make it slightly harder to reach through. For true protection against firearms, you need UL-rated bullet-resistant glass or specialized security systems like Riot Glass that use thick layers of polycarbonate. Film is a valuable part of a security strategy, but it should never be marketed or relied upon as a 'bulletproof' solution.
