Are shower doors tempered glass?

Yes, in the vast majority of modern construction and renovations, shower doors are made of tempered glass. In fact, building codes in most regions strictly require the use of safety glass for all glass shower and tub enclosures to prevent serious injury. Standard glass poses a significant risk in bathrooms because it can shatter into large, sharp shards if someone slips and falls against it. Tempered glass, however, is designed to be four to five times stronger than regular glass and is engineered to break into small, relatively harmless granules if an impact occurs. This safety feature is critical in the wet and slippery environment of a bathroom. When shopping for shower doors, you will often see a small etched logo in one of the corners, which confirms that the glass has been tempered according to safety standards. These doors are available in various thicknesses, typically ranging from 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch for frameless designs, providing both aesthetic beauty and structural security. Beyond safety, tempered glass is also more resistant to the thermal stresses caused by hot water and steam, ensuring the door remains durable over years of daily use.
